Each year, the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) lifts more than 4 million people out of poverty by putting thousands of dollars back in the pockets of working families. The EITC has been called one of the largest and most effective poverty-reduction programs in the nation. In addition, today more than a quarter of U.S. families are asset-poor -- meaning if their income were disrupted, they would quickly fall below the poverty level without public assistance.  While programs like EITC are important, asset poverty must also be addressed to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty.

This call will highlight strategies used by family foundations to ensure more low-income families receive the EITC and will provide an overview of strategies designed to expand asset creation, accumulation, retention and protection.

Presented by Amanda Feinstein, Program Officer, Economic Security, The Walter & Elise Haas Fund and Mary Hunt-Lieving, Senior Program Officer, Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. Co-sponsored by the Family Funders Network, the Asset Funders Network and the EITC Funders Network.

About the Family Funders Network:

The Family Funders Network seeks to increase peer learning and action among family foundations regarding ways to strengthen vulnerable families and children. We believe there is a natural connection between families that give and families in need, and the network is cultivating it.
