One of the biggest challenges facing American grantmakers who want to support overseas-based non-governmental organizations is determining if those organizations qualify to receive funds like a domestic public charity. Currently there is no infrastructure for efficiently verifying if an NGO meets the IRS’ requirements for “equivalency” to a U.S. nonprofit, and no easy way for funders to know if such a ruling has been made.

The webinar that will preview a new resource designed to improve this situation dramatically. Participants will learn about NGOsource, a centralized service and database designed to eliminate the duplicative and expensive processes that grantmakers and NGOs must currently go through each time the latter requests grant funding. Originally developed through a partnership among the Council of Foundations, the Foundation Center, Independent Sector, and InterAction, NGOsource is now under consideration by the federal government.

Presented by Sheila Warren and Martin Schneiderman of NGOsource, the webinar will include an overview of the project, a demonstration of the web portals for grantmakers and NGOs, an update on the government review by the IRS and U.S. Treasury Department, and a preview of projected costs.
