It could have been a missed opportunity to bring millions in federal stimulus funds to needy Connecticut families. But, in 2010, deep into a recession, the state’s philanthropic community – guided by the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy – worked with government representatives assembled by then-governor M. Jodi Rell and nonprofi t advocates to orchestrate a coordinated public/private partnership to help bring extra relief to ease the suffering for their low-income families. Connecticut's older adult population is expected to double over the next 25 years and account for almost a quarter of the state's population. Ensuring that older adults remain connected to needed resources is essential to community-based strategies for this growing segment of our population. This 2-1-1 Barometer reviews the thousands of calls 2-1-1 receives annually from older adults or their family members for resources and programs designed to assist older adults, including some interesting United Way initiatives aimed at aging in place. To establish a baseline of information, the Council surveyed its member and non-member funders to determine their current “aging” awareness, activities and future programming ideas. This baseline survey was conducted as part of the Council's work on the EngAGEment Initiative, a national program led by Grantmakers in Aging (GIA) on philanthropy and aging issues.
