Key Activities

Knowledge and information

We compile data and information on grantmaking and charitable giving in the state, provide analysis and context, and disseminate knowledge broadly to the philanthropic sector. Examples include:

  • Giving In Connecticut, first and second editions, a summary of philanthropy in the state
  • Capital Campaign Reports for the Hartford, Fairfield and New Haven regions, an overview of funding drives for capital or major projects
  • Connecticut Grantmakers Online (CGO), a searchable database of more than 2,200 funding organizations in the state
  • Connecticut Toolkit for Giving, an overview of various options for charitable giving.

Education and professional development

Each year, we present an average of 20 programs that are focused on providing our members and grantmakers with knowledge that can help them in their work. These programs and workshops pertain to a variety of topics of interest to funders as well as “how-to” sessions that focus on particular skills. These programs are delivered in locations around the state to help grantmakers make the most of their giving.

Connections among grantmakers and others

We provide opportunities for grantmakers with common interests to come together to share knowledge and experiences. Periodically, we also offer grantmakers and grantseekers the opportunity to engage in dialogue. The Council also represents the interests of our members at numerous meetings, both local and national.

Leadership

The Council is a leader in enhancing and promoting philanthropy in Connecticut. We serve as an advocate for philanthropy by sharing with elected and appointed officials, the media and the general public the importance and impact of philanthropy on the public good in the state.

As a nonprofit organization, the Council is governed by a 25-member board of directors that includes representation from our member organizations and the community at large. Our support is derived from our members, program registration fees, publication sales and grants.
