As Black Lives Matter protests continue in communities across Connecticut, why do so few Connecticut towns have racially diverse residents? Even as Connecticut’s population has grown more diverse over time, why are so many of our towns racially and economically uniform?

One answer may be found in your town’s land use rules. Zoning can be used to segregate groups of people and stifle diversity. Exclusionary zoning often bans or limits certain development types to reduce the likelihood it can be built. Some common exclusionary tactics include banning multifamily housing, requiring oversized lots, requiring excessive parking, and establishing square footage minimums for residences.

A vibrant, diverse, mixed-income community requires a diversity of housing types: multifamily & single family homes, small granny flats and large family units to support a diversity of living situations.
