Join the Fairfield County Funders Network for a conversation with Phil Buchanan about the power and perils of philanthropy. This program is open to staff and trustees of grantmaking organizations as well as philanthropic advisors.

When philanthropy is both under increasing pressure and scrutiny, Phil explores a number of questions about philanthropic practice:

  • How should foundations and donors approach giving?
  • What does it take to be effective and earn the trust of those who donors seek to help?
  • How can donors mitigate the power dynamics between them and those they fund?
  • How is giving like or unlike investing?
  • Should nonprofits be encouraged to act “like business?”

These are among the questions we’ll explore in this session with Phil Buchanan, author of the newly released book, Giving Done Right: Effective Philanthropy and Making Every Dollar Count. Called a “must-read for those who really want to make a difference” by Equal Justice Initiative founder Bryan Stevenson, Giving Done Right is, in the words of New Hampshire Charitable Foundation president and CEO Richard Ober, “grounded in data, animated by real stories well told, and provocative in ways that shed more light than heat.”

The first 25 registrants will receive a free copy of Giving Done Right (one book per organization).

Breakfast will be provided.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A majority of American households give to charity in some form or another--from local donations to food banks, religious organizations, or schools, to contributions to prevent disease or protect basic freedoms. Whether you're in a position to give $1 or $1 million, every giver needs to answer the same question: How do I channel my giving effectively to make the greatest difference?

In Giving Done Right, Phil Buchanan, the president of the Center for Effective Philanthropy, arms donors with what it takes to do more good more quickly and to avoid predictable errors that lead too many astray. This crucial book is a counter to those who diminish the role of philanthropy and the nonprofits it supports. While the book offers constructive critique, it also highlights what is possible when giving is done right, pointing to exemplars like software entrepreneur Tim Gill, who helped expand rights for LGBTQ people, as well as to nonprofits doing heroic and unsung work everyday. It busts commonly held myths and challenges the idea that "business thinking" holds the answer to effective philanthropy.
