Job Description

The staff accountant is part of a two-person finance team that manages the day-to-day accounting operations, including assisting with payroll, accounts payable, employee expense reimbursements, journal entries, and bank account reconciliations. In addition, the staff accountant contributes to the budget process, monthly and quarterly financial reporting, the annual audit, and 990-PF preparation. This position reports to the director of finance and works closely with the operations manager.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Accounting

  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including grants payable and accounts payable, and employee expense reimbursements
  • Record financial transactions accurately through journal entries and reconciliation of credit card and bank accounts
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis efforts
  • Assist in preparation of detailed monthly and quarterly financial reports to support management decision making
  • Process compensation payments for board members
  • Assist with the annual audit
  • Prepare and manage IRS Form 1099’s for all eligible vendors
  • Assist in preparing the IRS Form 990 schedules
  • Review and update the Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, including chart of accounts and class codes

 

Administrative

  • Act as the primary resource for purchasing and procurement, overseeing vendor contracts management, check requests, and purchase order processes
  • Liaise with outsourced IT partner and collaborate with teams to resolve technical problems and implement new technology solutions
  • Provide general office support, including managing communications (answering phones), organizing files, and handling mail

 

Qualifications and Skills:

Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • Two or more years of experience in general accounting or bookkeeping
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online or similar accounting software
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, practices, and financial reporting
  • Strong project management abilities, with a proven track record of meeting deadlines
  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills preferred
  • Excellent team player and collaboration skills with strong work ethic

Work Location:

Employees work in-person at the foundation’s Hartford office a minimum of two days per week; subject to change based on organizational policies.
