NEW BRITAIN, CT -- The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has wrapped up its 2019 grant-making year, in total authorizing more than $1,314,681 in grant awards including over $430,000 in awards designated as Community Response Grants. The Foundation also awarded over $225,000 in scholarships to students furthering their education. Most of the grants and scholarships impacted organizations and individuals in its four-town service area of Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington.
Of the Community Initiative Grants approved was $7,500 for the Foundation to purchase 5,000 reusable bags for distribution to multiple area food pantries and community service departments. These organizations are having a difficult time as an unintended consequence of the new bag ban since they aren’t able to acquire and use plastic bags for their clients.
Following is a listing of recently approved Community Foundation grants by category:
Community Initiatives Grants
- CFGNB Capacity Building Initiative. A grant of up to $55,000 to support 2020 programming that will provide local non-profit organizations in-depth and hands-on training that will increase and strengthen their capacity.
- 2020 Census. A $7,500 grant to support local marketing efforts to encourage residents in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville, and Southington to respond to the 2020 census when distributed in March.
- Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance. An $8,000 grant to provide early childhood providers, parents, and advocates in our four towns with information, training, and connections so they can more effectively advocate to support young children.
- Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut. A $40,000 grant to support programming for parents and their young children at the Central Connecticut Family Literacy Center.
- Plainville Family Resource Network. A $11,776 grant to both provide the Conscious Discipline series to Plainville parents and educators and support a part-time Aide to maintain a high level of programming for the growing number of families at the PFRN.
- YWCA of New Britain. A $10,000 grant to support expansion of the existing preschool readiness program with the addition of one classroom to serve part-time students in the Central Connecticut Family Literacy program.
Catalyst Fund Grant
- Jordan Porco Foundation. A $12,500 grant for suicide prevention among children and young adults by bringing the 4 What’s Next program to an estimated 300 middle and high school aged youth; providing QPR (Question, Persuade, Respond) training to 120 adults; and holding a Fresh Check day at CCSU.

- The Keith and Ann Bova Family Fund. A $190 grant to the Warm the Children Fund of New Britain.
- Kevin and Christine (Malachowski) Bruemmer Fund. A $250 grant to the HOCC Auxiliary at New Britain General to support the Chrysanthemum Ball 2019 and a $250 grant to the Smith School to support the Annual Trick or Trunk.
- Gilrain Family Fund. A $3,000 grant to Jordan Porco Foundation to support the 4 What’s Next Program and QPR Training.
- Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico Relief Fund. A $5,810 grant to the Instituto Socio – Económico Comunitario, Inc. for the Economic Development Micro-Enterprises Award program.
- Kindelan Family Fund. A $1,500 grant to Prudence Crandall Center, Inc.
- Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund. A total of $4,800 in grants to programs and causes including the New Britain Downtown District for the Trick or Treat Safe Zone, the Warm the Children Fund of New Britain, the Hospital for Special Care for the Superheroes for Autism Capital Campaign, the Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association to support the Annual Golf Tournament, the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner, and Disabled American Veterans, Inc., to support the Wreaths Across America Event.
- Perra Family Fund. A $5,000 grant to Hartford Bishop’s Foundation for the Forward with Faith Campaign.
- Raymond and Frances Wolski Family Fund. A $1,600 grant to HALS Academy to cover ticket costs for 151 students and 9 adults and a $1,000 grant to New Britain High School for a 2 day Artist-In-Residence workshop with JCON.
