Foundation Continues Support for Immigrant Families and Children

In light of the June 23rd decision of the US Supreme Court regarding immigration and the June 27th rally in Hartford by members of the Connecticut Immigrant Rights Alliance, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has reaffirmed its commitment to the work in support of immigrants, including undocumented immigrants, in Greater New Haven.
Through community partnerships, grantmaking and public education, including an Instagram account, the foundation is ensuring that the community as a whole is more informed about the economic and cultural value of immigrants in our region and the unique barriers that undocumented immigrants face. It strives to create a more welcoming community in which immigrants are fully integrated members who are achieving greater civic and economic participation and success. In addition, the foundation is the convener of the statewide Immigration Strategic Funders Collaborative, a consortium of funders, service providers and advocacy organizations throughout Connecticut: The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Fairfield County's Community Foundation, Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Hispanic Federation, Perrin Family Foundation, and the Progreso Latino Fund (a committee-advised fund at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven).
“Because we believe the current and future prosperity of our region is tightly linked to the success of immigrants, including those who may be undocumented, The Foundation will continue its work to support the families and individuals in our community and in Connecticut who would have benefited from the President’s executive actions,” says William W. Ginsberg, president & CEO of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. “The need for immigrant families and children to have access to critical services continues and our work in support for them will continue, too." As part of their reaffirmed commitment, the foundation's Instagram project documents the lives of immigrants in Greater New Haven. The project uses Instagram, the photo-sharing social network, to post portraits of immigrants along with short biographies about their experiences. The Instagram account, immigrantexperiencegnh, features photos taken by local photographer Ian Christmann. Read @ New Haven Register >>

Travelers Championship Generates Record-Breaking $2.8 Million for Charity

The Travelers Companies announced that the 2016 Travelers Championship generated a record $2.8 million for charity. The tournament, which donates 100 percent of its net proceeds to nonprofits throughout New England, placed an emphasis on supporting organizations that care for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and conduct research to find a cure. The Bruce Edwards Foundation Benefit Dinner, one of the fundraising activities, raised more than $1.2 million to support ALS research. This year’s primary beneficiary was the ALS Clinic at the Hospital for Special Care (HSC) in New Britain. Each year, HSC cares for more than 250 Connecticut residents with ALS, a progressive disorder that affects the function of nerves and muscle.  Read more >>

Updated Report Looks to Tackle Critical Issues

The 2016 edition of Metro Hartford Progress Points, driven by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, takes a look at past and present efforts to tackle critical issues. The report offers clear data to build awareness and shared understanding of the key issues impacting our communities, and is the result of collaboration between nine stakeholders representing local government, businesses, nonprofits, academic and philanthropic institutions and organizations committed to making long-term progress in our region.
The Metro Hartford Progress Points partners recognize that needed systemic change requires both strong leadership and a more coordinated and integrated effort to address shared regional challenges. The challenges indicated in the report include: the exodus of young people from the state; minimal job growth; and a school funding conundrum with declining enrollment but increased expenditures. CTMOM 2-Day Free Dental Clinic to Visit Hartford

Thanks to hundreds of volunteers, sponsors and in-kind donations, the Connecticut Mission of Mercy, affectionately know as CTMOM, will set up a 2-day free dental clinic on September 16-17 at the XL Center in Hartford. The Connecticut Mission of Mercy (CTMOM) is a large-scale dental clinic where dental treatment is provided at no cost to individuals who cannot afford dental care.
The two day clinic provides free dental care to the underserved and uninsured in Connecticut – those that would otherwise go without dental care. Oral health is inseparable from general health and can affect a person’s self-esteem, compromise their ability to work, attend school, and lead a normal life. The Connecticut Foundation for Dental Outreach (CDFO) in collaboration with the Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) held the state’s first Mission of Mercy project in 2008. Every year, the Connecticut Mission of Mercy project is held in a different location throughout the state. Read More >>

He has inspired mothers of murder victims to forgive, inspired young men in the streets to choose a college degree over a prison number, and shifted the thinking of tough-on-crime advocates from the lock-em-up-throw-away-the-key mentality to believing redemption is possible.
