CCP Continues to Support Charitable Deduction Tax Extenderstax-extenders
Connecticut Council for Philanthropy (CCP), joined a national coalition of more than 2,000 businesses, associations, nonprofits and other stakeholders in sending a letter to Congress last week urging them to immediately restore the expired tax extenders provisions, including the IRA charitable rollover and enhanced deductions for donations of food inventory and conservation easements. The extenders expired for the fifth time in recent years on January 1, 2015, and CCP along with the coalition have urged Congress to address the measures as soon as possible. CCP has been advocating for the extenders since 2014.
Campaign to End Homelessness Moves to the Next LevelMelville

The Melville Charitable Trust recently arranged for an assessment of Reaching Home, the campaign to end homelessness in Connecticut led by a collaborative of advocacy organizations, government agencies, and community providers and coordinated by the Partnership for Strong Communities.
"Reaching Home has been incredibly successful over the arc of its 11-year history," said Janice Elliott, executive director of the Melville Charitable Trust. "Among its many accomplishments: advocating for and securing over $300 million in funding for programs to end homelessness, conducting the state's first study of youth experiencing homelessness, and closing in on the goal of ending homelessness among veterans."

The assessment, Coordinating Collaboration to End Homelessness, was conducted and written as the Campaign's work concluded planning and moved to implementation and sustainability. It identifies three key actions that have made the Campaign a success so far: finding a clear shared purpose and defining clear goals to guide the Campaign, nurturing strong relationships with state officials, and speaking with one voice in advocating for solutions.
The report also highlights areas the Campaign can build on including: further refining its collaborative structure, amplifying its communications, and expanding engagement of staff working at the front lines of service delivery and people who have experienced homelessness.
"I'm excited to share what we've learned halfway through this campaign in this new report," said Elliott. "My hope is the lessons we learned will be useful to others who are considering a similar collective impact model for addressing social issues in their own state." Read more >>
Partnership to Give Boost for Fairfield County Young Adults >>FCCF
Armed with research about their community and bolstered by partnerships, Fairfield County's Community Foundation has launched its Thrive by 25 program to help Fairfield County young people achieve self-sufficiency by age 25.
Last fall, the Community Foundation posed several questions about the region and its young people to Connecticut Voices for Children, and the resulting report,  Youth Opportunity in Fairfield County, has informed the development of the Community Foundation's Thrive by 25 program.
Connecticut Voices for Children found significant unmet needs among the children and youth of Fairfield County, with: over 800 students dropping out of high school each year; 1 in 8 youth ages 16-24 unemployed; and over 2,600 youth ages 16-19 neither employed nor in school.
The Community Foundation with its new partner, JPMorgan Chase & Co. will begin tackling opportunities for young people in Fairfield County. JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced an expanded commitment to CT young adults with a $200,000 grant for a pilot of  Our Piece of the Pie's Pathways to Careers program to Fairfield County. The grant is part of the firm's $250 million, five-year workforce readiness initiative, New Skills at Work.
"I am thrilled to have the generous support and the confidence of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation to begin the planning for the Pathways to Careers Fairfield County pilot," said Juanita T. James, president and CEO of Fairfield County's Community Foundation. "We could not ask for better partners than Our Piece of the Pie and JPMorgan Chase Foundation in pursuing our vision to ensure that young adults Thrive by 25!" Read more >>
Families Have 'Brighter Futures' Thanks to Foundation SupportHFPG
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has granted $780,000 to the Brighter Futures Family Centers to ensure continued programs and support for families and enhance opportunities for Hartford children to learn and thrive.
Brighter Futures Family Centers, designed to meet neighborhood families' specific needs and foster young children's success in school and beyond, are located in the Asylum Hill, Behind the Rocks, Blue Hills, Frog Hollow, Clay Arsenal and Parkville neighborhoods. Numerous community and state organizations provide programs in partnership with the Family Centers, increasing the range and accessibility of services for Hartford families.
"The Family Centers serve as community hubs," said Richard Sussman, the Foundation's director of early childhood investments. "They emphasize family development and underscore the importance of functional families being their child's first teachers. They also serve as innovation hubs for new programs and services being developed by agencies and government."
The groundbreaking work being done at the Family Centers is now being recognized beyond Hartford. One of the Family Centers' nonprofit partners, Catholic Charities, has replicated the model at two new centers in Waterbury and New Haven.
