New Haven and Greater Bridgeport Accept Challenge to Improve Community HealthCCP-The-power-of-membership-logo

Aetna-HealthyCommunity50-MapThe Aetna Foundation, American Public Health Association and National Association of Counties have announced the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge finalists, or HealthyCommunity50, which include the Greater Bridgeport Opportunities Industrialization Center Inc. and the New Haven Health Department.
The Challenge will award $1.5 million in prizes to small and mid-sized cities and counties that are able to show measurable improvements in health outcomes over the course of several years through cross-sector partnerships. At the conclusion of the Challenge, the programs most able to show measurable change will be eligible for prize awards from $25,000 - $500,000. Participants will be judged on their own progress and will not be competing against each other. The Challenge is designed so that participants share successful health improvement strategies that can be scaled and replicated by other communities. HealthyCommunity50 members will share experiences and best practices throughout the competition via a learning network.
“Approximately 90 percent of the factors affecting risk of premature death exist outside of a doctor’s office or hospital,” said Mark T. Bertolini, Aetna chairman and CEO. “The Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge supports communities that are working to address and improve these factors and build a healthier world, community by community.” Read more >>

Are You Dense Inc. Launches Hispanic/Latina Breast Health ProgramCCP-The-power-of-membership-logo

Are-You-Dense-Breast-Health-VideoAre You Dense, Inc., a global nonprofit breast health organization, in collaboration with the Waterbury-based Madre Latina Inc., has released an educational breast health resource in Spanish. The resource, "Early Matters: Providing Opportunities With Educational Resources for Early Detection," includes educational literature and a video with English captions, urging women to be smart about breast cancer screening options, including knowledge of their breast density for optimum breast health.
Yoellie Iglesias, director of Madre Latina, reports, "The video is empowering, giving women the ability to be ambassadors of our breast health."
Nancy M. Cappello, Ph.D., founder and director of Are You Dense, Inc. and a video contributor, explains that dense breast tissue hides cancerous tumors on mammograms, making cancer difficult to detect until much further along. "Our mission is clear, first, ensuring that no woman suffers the tragedy of a preventable late-stage diagnosis and second, eliminating barriers to adjunct screening, such as ultrasound and MRI. We are especially grateful to the Connecticut Community Foundation for funding this targeted outreach effort." Read more >>

United Way's Financial Opportunity Center Partners Will Assist ALICE PopulationCCP-The-power-of-membership-logo

United-Way-ALICE-VideoUnited Way of Western Connecticut (UWWC) has created a Financial Opportunity Center and partnered with three nonprofits that will work together to provide financial literacy services to the local community. Grants totaling $74,000 will be given to the Women’s Business Development Council (WBDC) to provide services in Danbury, New Milford and Stamford; the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC) in Stamford; and The Bridge To Independence and Career Opportunities (TBICO) to serve clients in Danbury and New Milford.
Each nonprofit will deliver financial literacy courses and budget coaching to individuals in the ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population. ALICE refers to people who are living paycheck to paycheck and often struggle to afford life’s basic necessities. The partner agencies have agreed on three main outcomes to measure success: improving the credit scores of clients, helping them achieve one personal financial goal, and ensuring that they adhere to a household budget for at least six months. Additionally, in the spring of 2017, UWWC will launch an incentivized savings program for individuals who complete the financial coaching sessions.
“United Way is pleased to implement a series of programs that we believe will provide an immediate positive impact on the lives of hard-working individuals in our community,” said Kim Morgan, CEO of UWWC. “Our ALICE report from 2014 revealed that 35% of households in Connecticut are struggling to make ends meet each month. I am confident that if we can assist individuals through financial education and provide them access to desperately needed savings, then they will be propelled to future success.” Read More >>
