The Mark Twain House & Museum

The Mark Twain House & Museum is the primary American museum dedicated to the life, legacy, and literary work of Samuel Clemens. From this house, Twain changed the way the world viewed Americans and the way Americans viewed themselves. It was here that he wrote his best known books during the 18 years of his residence. The museum typically sees 70,000 visitors in person every year from all 50 states and 60 countries around the world. In 2020, the museum created a remarkable online presence reaching 110,000 people with its virtual house tour and an online lecture presence with notable speakers and authors that has reached over 27,000 people. Twain’s relevance continues to be respected by diverse audiences and features leading lights of the arts and cultural world.

To replace the retiring development director, the Museum seeks applicants with a team ethic to engage with the Greater Hartford area as well as cultivating a strengthening national network. The position works with the Museum’s Director, board, and staff to advance The Mark Twain House & Museum’s mission through contributed income.

The successful candidate will demonstrate organized leadership with staff and board, and be a hands-on, participative manager in supporting the Museum, ensuring operating excellence in:

  • Major Gifts
  • Annual Giving
  • Capital Campaigns
  • Corporate giving
  • Membership


  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 5-7 years demonstrated success in planning, managing, implementing fundraising, especially major gifts.
  • Excellent computer literacy, experience with CRMs.
  • Outstanding project management and organizational skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills.
  • Positive and enthusiastic style; a leader capable of motivating others.
  • Experience working in an urban community.
  • Museum or arts & culture experience strongly preferred
  • Commitment to the museum’s mission.
  • Ability to climb stairs and lift 30 pounds of weight are required.
