HARTFORD, CT -- Everyday Democracy seeks a Communications Specialist - Content Writer who is integral in making Everyday Democracy’s thought leadership and print and digital content compelling and impactful.


The Communications Specialist - Content Writer is a sharp editor and writer who is integral in making Everyday Democracy’s thought leadership and all our print and digital content compelling and impactful. This position also supports the efficient development of the large volume of subject matter collateral Everyday Democracy produces, in collaboration with our Strengthening Democratic Capacity unit, freelance writers, and the broader Communications team. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this individual will serve as a member of Everyday Democracy’s communications team.

Essential Duties

  • Edit and write high-interest, high-impact content for our weekly blog
  • Write big, conversation-driving pieces, both as long-lead features published in the newsletter several times a year, and shorter news stories or essays published on a regular schedule online
  • Tell narrative stories that elevate diverse voices and generate deeper awareness and actionable understanding on racial equity and an authentic democracy
  • Distill complex topics and analysis into readable, digestible content
  • Conduct high-quality research to write attractive copy that uses SEO principles to maximize copy’s reach
  • Assist in the development of the annual report and grant proposals; show impact with clarity
  • Follow an editorial calendar, collaborating with other members of the communications and Senior Leadership team to ensure timely delivery of materials
  • Copyedit and help ensure that our digital and print publications meet the Everyday Democracy’s style, brand, voice, tone, and other guidelines
  • Assist the Director of Communication with leadership messages and crisis communications
  • Will develop and maintain working relationships with the Strengthening Democratic Capacity Unit and stay abreast of their ongoing work, interview former and current program participants, and cover organization events
  • Build relationships with key reporters, bloggers and allies including drafting press releases, website content, and periodic communications with allies and supporters
  • Learn about and help refine our Everyday Democracy voice so communications promote a racial equity lens, by which we mean: centering relationships, shifting, and sharing power, building bridges, and centering marginalized voices

Qualifications

  • Superb editing and writing skills
  • Demonstrated experience writing specifically for digital channels (not just social)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively interact with senior leadership
  • Strong grammar; AP Style Guide knowledge a plus
  • Microsoft office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) skills required
  • 3-5 years of experience editing, proofreading and feature article writing
  • Comfort working under time-sensitive deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple high-priority pieces
  • Flawless accuracy in terms of grammar and information
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Takes initiative and solves problems independently

Required Experience

Bachelor's in English, journalism, communications or related field preferred

Work Environment

  • M-F - flexible/weekends needed
  • Some travel required
