CANAAN, CT -- Housatonic Youth Services Bureau seeks an Executive Director who in partnership with the Board, will be responsible for the success of HYSB in accomplishing its mission.

Organization Overview

For over 25 years, HYSB has supported children, teens, and families in crisis and empowered young people from kindergarten through high school to become the best that they can be. Founded in 1991, HYSB exists to strengthen the emotional health of youth and families by providing free behavioral health services and empowerment programs in partnership with our public schools, local organizations, donors, and volunteers in the Northwest Corner Community. 

Job Summary

The Executive Director, in partnership with the Board, is responsible for the success of HYSB in accomplishing its mission. The ED Handles detailed, complex concepts and problems, balances multiple tasks simultaneously, and makes prompt decisions regarding administrative issues.  Expectations include setting the direction for programs and services based on community and youth development needs and in consultation with staff and the Board, while also monitoring the effectiveness of all programs, bringing outcomes and recommendations relative to the continuation, elimination or new program development to the Board. Establishing strong and appropriate relationships with Board, committees, volunteers, staff, donors and clients is key.  In addition, it is expected that the ED will engage with executive colleagues, outside agencies, organizations and individuals, to establish working partnerships and foster beneficial collaborations wherever possible.

Job Responsibilities

Mission and Board Relations

  • Assure that the organization has a long-range strategy that achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
  • Provide leadership in setting program direction. Empower and work with staff to establish and continue effective programs, garner Board and community buy-in for those programs, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the Board.
  • Ensure smooth implementation of fundraising initiatives
  • Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization's work.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.
  • Report regularly to the Board on complete financial information, including up to date budgets, audited financials where applicable, status of programs, mentoring of staff, and other important organizational matter.

Community relations

  • Facilitate the integration of HYSB into the fabric of the community by using effective marketing, communications and outreach tools and activities and serve as HYSB’s chief spokesperson. Empower staff on outreach efforts.
  • Act as an advocate within the public and private sectors for issues relevant to HYSB, both its services andconstituencies.
  • Listen to clients, volunteers, donors, the schools, and the community in order to improve services and to generate community involvement. Provide all constituents meaningful feedback.
  • Work with legislators, regulatory agencies, volunteers, and representatives of the not-for-profit sector to promote legislative and regulatory policies that encourage a healthy community and address the issues of HYSB constituencies.

Human Resources

  • Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure that job descriptions are developed and kept up to date, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
  • See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.
  • Empower staff to become leaders in their fields, including expanding their skill sets and promoting their efforts at outreach and program development.
  • Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.

Finance and Budget

Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices, including adequate resources for recording expenses and contributions, and generating budgets and other required reports. Work with the staff, the Finance Committee, and the Board in preparing a budget; and ensure that the organization operates within budget guidelines.


  • Promote an effective fund development program by serving as the chief development officerorhiringandsupervisinganindividualresponsibleforthisactivity.
  • Assist the Board and its Development Committee in designing, implementing, and monitoring a viable fundraising plan, policies, and .
  • Guarantee the development and operation of gift management systems and reports qualitydecision-making.

Job Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree is required with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a management position. As chief executive officer, this individual must possess critical competencies in four broad categories: commitment to results, management skills, ability to motivate both internally and externally, and a demonstrated interest in and knowledge of the needs of youth and their families.

  • Commitment to results: The Executive Director is familiar with program evaluation and results-based accountability.  S/he takes those results and uses them to help lead change and reinforce effective programs and solutions. S/he anticipates and solves problems and takes advantage of opportunities; s/he is a self-starter and a team player.
  • Management Skills: As HYSB’s leader, this position requires an individual with knowledge of and experience in management and administration. The position requires demonstrated experience in integrating and coordinating diverse areas of management.
    • Knowledge in the following areas is required: human services; finance and personnel; oral and written communications; and planning and evaluation.
    • Experience in not-for-profit management, governance, communityrelationsispreferred, along with a strongknowledgeoffunddevelopment.
    • A high level of personal skills in making formal, persuasive presentations to groups and dealing effectively with people from all segments of thecommunity.

  • Ability to motivate: The chief executive manages continuity, change, and transition. This individual knows how to influence and enable others. Critically, the Executive Director will mentor the staff to expand their skills and help them develop programs and approaches that are effective within the community. Her/His responsibilities include motivating donors, contributing towns, participating educational institutions, and other key constituencies to work effectively with HYSB.
  • Demonstrated Interest in Needs of Youth & Families: The ED must have demonstrated awareness of and interest in the changing needs of youth and families both in general and in the communities HYSB serves. This individual must also be well informed about current research and methodologies that inform and substantiate the services and programs offered by HYSB.
