Nonprofits Receive $86,525 in late June Grants

TORRINGTON, CT -- The Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation has awarded grants to 21 area nonprofit organizations, totaling $86,525 during its second grant cycle of 2018. The Community Foundation awards discretionary grants to Northwest Connecticut charities three times a year: early spring, late June and late fall.

Noteworthy among the recent include:

  • $1,500 to Healing Meals Community Project to support the purchase of organic produce from a local farmer and fund a wellness education program to educate local clients about healthy food choices and long-term health impacts

“Unhealthy eating habits, use of toxic pesticides in conventional agriculture, and lack of social relationships are major factors in the unprecedented health and mental health crises in the United States,” said Sarah Leathers, Founder and Executive Director, Healing Meals Community Project. “Healing Meals support of local organic farms along with its wellness education program addresses these factors through an integrated approach that combines hands-on learning, a soil-to-table environmental education and food systems curriculum, and leadership development for our youth.”
  • $5,725 to Susan B. Anthony Project to support the cost of a new electronic key card access security system for all shelter and transitional housing buildings

“A new system will result in cost and time savings for SBAP, which must change the locks manually and at great expense each time a resident inadvertently loses her key or moves out of the facility into permanent housing,” said Jeanne Fusco, Executive Director, Susan B. Anthony Project.
  • $3,000 to the Torrington Library to support the cost of preserving, framing and digitizing recently discovered historical documents in their collection

“There are few organizations in the Northwest Corner that house such a collection of Early American documents, especially with ties to the Founding Fathers,” said Jessica Gueniat, Library Director. “It is our hope that the documents will be available for the public to view not only at the library, but also digitally on the library website.”
