People's United Community Foundation Awards More Than $1M in Grants to Connecticut Nonprofits

BRIDGEPORT, CT -– People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arms of People’s United Bank, today announced that it awarded $1,114,226 to 155 Connecticut non-profit organizations in 2017.

Funding was distributed state-wide in alignment with the Foundations’ focus areas including: youth development, community and economic development, and affordable housing.

Grant recipients included:

  • Billings Forge Community Works
  • Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust
  • Capital Workforce Partners
  • Connecticut Food Bank
  • Eastern Connecticut Housing Opportunities
  • Family Centers Inc.
  • Girls Scouts of Connecticut
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Partnership for Strong Communities
  • Supportive Housing Works
  • The Center for Family Justice
  • The Workplace

The largest single 2017 Foundation grant of $175,000 was awarded to Junior Achievement USA throughout its six-state footprint, a portion of which will be allocated to Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, Junior Achievement of Western Connecticut, and Junior Achievement of Southwest Connecticut. These dollars will help fund financial literacy and career readiness programs for Connecticut students. The award was part of People’s United Bank’s 175th anniversary celebration. 

“Community giving has remained at the core of the bank’s culture throughout its 175 year history and we look forward to continuing our community support and expanding our partnerships throughout the communities we serve,” said Karen Galbo, Executive Director of the Foundations.

In total, People’s United Community Foundation and People’s United Community Foundation of Eastern Massachusetts awarded more than $3.5 million in 2017 to more than 500 non-profit organizations across its footprint in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
