Individuals, Community Organizations Invited to Stand Together to Address Basic Human Needs

HARTFORD, CT -- United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut today announced Neighbors in Need, a local effort that will distribute 100 percent of funds collected to organizations providing services to meet the immediate and longer term needs of children and families displaced by the devastation of recent hurricanes.

”It’s natural for family and friends to welcome loved ones to their homes. Many of us have personal experience or know of others, including our employees, who are assisting in this way,” said Paula S. Gilberto, president and CEO of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. “While such generosity is appreciated, many arrivals and their host families are in need of basic human services, now and in the longer term. Neighbors in Need is one way to help address those needs.”

Gilberto noted that 2-1-1, a service of Connecticut United Ways in partnership with the State of Connecticut, has been fielding calls from hurricane victims and their families, predominately those affected by Hurricane Maria.

As of September 22, 2-1-1 staff has handled more than 900 calls state-wide. Approximately 370 of these calls came from residents in central and northeastern Connecticut with the majority from Hartford and New Britain. Top needs identified in calls to 2-1-1 are food, clothing, housing, employment and assistance with benefits including FEMA registration.

Gilberto noted that United Way is also working with local schools, municipalities and nonprofit agencies in coordinating services for those displaced from hurricane-affected areas as well as other residents experiencing tough times.

United Way has also shared Neighbors in Need with the philanthropic community with an invitation to align and coordinate efforts.

Individuals interested in donating to Neighbors in Need can do so through their United Way/workplace campaign or online at unitedwayinc.org/neighbors-in-need.
