Four Out of 10 Households in Central and Northeastern Connecticut Struggle to Make Ends Meet

HARTFORD, CT -- Forty percent of households in United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut’s 40-town region are struggling to make ends meet, according to the 2018 Connecticut United Ways ALICE Report.

ALICE is a United Way-coined acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. In an effort to support ALICE individuals and families, the organization today announced the United Way ALICE Fund, a local effort to make a positive impact on the ALICE population.

ALICE households earn more than the Federal Poverty Level but less than the basic cost of living for the state.

ALICE workers hold important jobs that are vital to the success of our communities such as child care providers, retail salespersons, customer service representatives, nursing assistants, teaching assistants and health care aides.

Despite working hard, ALICE families struggle to cover basic necessities and often have to make tough choices among housing, child care, transportation, food and health care. ALICE lives in every town and community in Connecticut.

United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut invests in programs and services that directly impact the household budgets of local ALICE families.

Help United Way ensure that all families in our region have the opportunity to succeed. Your additional gift of $20, $60, $120 to the United Way ALICE Fund provides the opportunity for local ALICE households to:

  • participate in quality early childhood education programs so that they enter kindergarten on track and ready to learn;
  • obtain financial management skills like how to create and stick to a budget; access income supports; and/or get a job through participation in United Way-supported programs and services; and,
  • access healthy food and increased food security through regional food banks and nutrition programs, such as Meals on Wheels
