HARTFORD, CT -- Firebox, the innovative farm-to-table restaurant in Hartford’s Frog Hollow neighborhood, will close after 13 years, citing the COVID-19 pandemic and “the uncertainty it has brought.” The Melville Charitable Trust launched Firebox on Broad Street in 2007, with a vision “to serve extraordinary food and to bring jobs, investment, and opportunity to the community." The restaurant became a destination for locally grown fare, crafting its daily menus with produce, meats and dairy from Connecticut farms.

WASHINGTON, DC -- The increasingly desperate affordable housing crisis has led nine U.S. foundations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and The Melville Charitable Trust to announce on Tuesday that they are launching a partnership to tackle systemic problems in the housing market. The aim: to ensure that the more than 11 million families across the country that spend more than half of their paycheck on rent and those who are homeless have access to safe, affordable housing. The partnership, called Funders For Housing and Opportunity, has divided an initial $4.9 million in grant money between four nonprofits that tackle housing insecurity. This first tranche of money is aimed “mostly in the area of policy, advocacy and organizing,” said Susan Thomas, senior program officer at Melville Charitable Trust and chair of Funders for Housing and Opportunity.

Three Rivers Increases Resources For Homeless Students

NORWICH, CT -- Recent studies show that up to half of community college students are housing insecure and 14 percent are homeless, so securing resources to assist its students is a priority at Three Rivers Community College. The College has been awarded a $7,000 grant by the Melville Charitable Trust to fund expenses related to the educational and employment goals of homeless students. In addition to the grant funding, Three Rivers is participating in the Youth Count Survey as part of the 2018 CT Coalition to End Homelessness and has named a point person for homelessness on campus.

Report: 1 in 10 Young Adults Experience Homelessness During 1 Year, High Number are LGBTQ

WASHINGTON — A groundbreaking study released today by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago reveals one in 10 young adults between the ages of 18 and 25, and at least one in 30 adolescents between the age of 13 and 17 experience some form of homelessness over the course of a year. This study captures youth homelessness broadly, including situations such as sleeping on the streets, in shelters, running away, and couch surfing.
