HARTFORD, CT -- Dozens of curators and librarians brought formidable weapons to the Capitol Wednesday, aiming to fight proposed cuts in state humanities funding with the lock and key to Benedict Arnold's Connecticut home, an 1800s edition of The Evening Farmer newspaper from Bridgeport and an original 1803 blue-backed speller from Noah Webster's West Hartford home. The advocates filled the Hall of Flags with these and other heirlooms of Connecticut's past, joining forces as CT Places Matter, an organization in support of the Connecticut Humanities Council, which uses state funding to award grants to hundreds of other groups.
TRUMBULL, CT -- Fairfield County’s Community Foundation’s Center for Nonprofit Excellence, in collaboration with the Connecticut Association of Nonprofits, held their first “Advocacy Day” on October 8, 2015 at the Trumbull Marriott, to help nonprofits build their advocacy skills. HARTFORD, CT –The Connecticut Health Foundation (CT Health) board of directors recently awarded two-year $40,000 grants to organizations to expand their health policy agenda to include advocacy for better dental health for low-income residents. CT Health’s Oral Health Advocacy and Leadership Initiative, a grant program of the foundation, seeks to expand oral health champions beyond traditional “teeth people,” or dental professionals.
WASHINGTON, DC -- Vikki Spruill Execitive Director of Council om Foundations Blogs: In July, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the America Gives More Act (H.R. 4719) with a bipartisan vote of 277 to 130. Now it needs to pass the Senate. I signed 100 letters to the members of the U.S. Senate urging them to act quickly and pass the America Gives More Act, because it will give individuals and private foundations the certainty that allows for more charitable giving...It is time for the Senate to act. I strongly encourage Majority Leader Harry Reid, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and their colleagues to bring H.R. 4719 to a floor vote in September.
