Serving our Communities:  A Collaborative Approach Between Municipalities and Philanthropy

The Connecticut Council for Philanthropy in partnership with the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is holding an event to discuss how municipal leaders can partner with philanthropy and nonprofit organizations to make more efficient and effective use of scarce resources, including local ARPA funding.

The event will feature the following two panel discussions:

  • ARPA Best Practices for Municipal and Philanthropic Leaders: This panel will highlight best practices exhibited in several communities that have thoughtfully engaged residents. In doing so, these communities are utilizing their funds to support residents most in need.
  • Panelists for this session will include:
    • Elysa Gordon, Vice President, Community Impact, Hartford Foundation (moderator)
    • Jason Bowza, First Selectman, Town of East Windsor
    • Jeff Caggiano, Mayor, City of Bristol
    • Maryam Elahi, President/CEO, Eastern Connecticut Community Foundation
    • John Salomone, City Manager, City of Norwich
  • Using Resources to Address Community Challenges: This panel will expand the conversation to feature municipal, philanthropic, and nonprofit leaders. They will discuss opportunities to more efficiently, effectively, and collaboratively use their resources to respond to the challenges facing their communities. These include issues such as mental health, basic human needs, concerns about youth crime, and wanting to find ways to positively engage youth.
  • Panelists for this session will include:
    • Karla Fortunato, President, Connecticut Council for Philanthropy (moderator)
    • Thea Montanez, COO, City of Hartford
    • Kevin Moynihan, First Selectman, Town of New Canaan
    • Jay Williams, President/CEO, Hartford Foundation
    • Jeff Shaw, Senior Public Policy Advisor, Connecticut Nonprofit Alliance

The panels will be followed by a sit-down lunch, giving attendees the opportunity to network with colleagues and potential partners from around the state.
