Building Healthier Communities Fund Accepting Grant Applications

Tuesday, March 19, 2019

TORRINGTON, CT -- The Building Healthier Communities Fund, a fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation, invites nonprofits to apply for program grants that support early childhood education and development by enhancing home visitation in the Greater Torrington and Winsted areas.

Grant awards for Building Healthier Communities Fund initiatives generally range from $5,000 to $50,000, but larger requests, if demonstrated to be critical to the success of the project or program may be considered.

The application deadline is May 1, 2019. Grant applications can be submitted online at www.northwestcf.org/grants

Home visitation as a prevention strategy supports pregnant mothers and new parents, promotes infant and child health, fosters educational development and school readiness, and helps prevent child abuse and neglect.

“Studies have shown that people who begin life with adverse childhood experiences can experience greater illness as well as difficulties in school and the workplace, thereby contributing to the link between socioeconomic conditions, education, and health,” said Julie Scharnberg of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation.

“Early childhood intervention is recognized as a promising approach to both improving the well-being of participating children and families and reducing the demand for social services across the life course.”

As part of the Affiliation Agreement between The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and Hartford Health Care Corporation, a distribution of $2,500,000 was made to the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation for the express purpose of enhancing the economic and community well-being of the Greater Torrington and Winsted areas.

Established in 1969, the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation serves 20 towns in Northwest Connecticut. Its total endowment, comprised of more than 280 funds, has grown from initial assets of $15,000 to more than $110 million. Last year, combined grants and scholarships totaled more than $4 million.
