Youth Program Provides Career, College and Civics Readiness

HARTFORD CT -- The Comcast Foundation announced today that it has awarded a $20,000 grant to the Center for Latino Progress’ FUTUROS program. FUTUROS targets Hartford’s Latino youth who face obstacles that might otherwise prevent them from being able to achieve their life goals and offers training, activities, and youth employment opportunities to help them prepare for college and technical careers.  The program also incorporates cultural exploration to ensure youth broaden their interests and skill sets to be well rounded and to facilitate success.

FUTUROS, now in its 10th year, works with approximately 250 students a year and offers training, tutoring and mentorship, college prep, exposure to leadership opportunities and internships.  FUTUROS participants can benefit and join the extended BiCi Co programs which promote mobility and access to jobs while supporting bicycle skills and safety.  This Center’s social enterprise provides bike safety and repair training, sustainable transportation, education, youth programs and internships, mechanics classes, and job training.

“Comcast believes in giving back to the communities where our customers and employees live and work,” said Dan Glanville, Vice President of Government, Regulatory and Community Affairs for Comcast’s Western New England region, which is headquartered in Berlin, Connecticut. “We do this by partnering with organizations, like the Center for Latino Progress, who are making a difference in people’s lives by providing tools and resources to help propel them forward. We’re proud to support FUTUROS, which is exposing students to hands-on experiences that they’ll take with them into college and the workforce.”

“For over a decade, Comcast has been a true partner of the Center providing mentors, marketing our programs and supporting us with over $100,000 in funding to date,” said Yanil Teron, Executive Director of the Center for Latino Progress. “Today, corporate investment in the Center has become a life line that allows us to maintain services and programs for the most underserved in our communities.  Not only is the financial investment in our people crucial for success and community well-being, it helps Connecticut’s overall economy.”
