ORANGE, CT -- As local nonprofits recently inspired a spirit of giving, the United Illuminating Company and its affiliated Foundation announced that they have awarded over $620,000 to more than 135 nonprofits since the beginning of 2015.
“At UI, supporting our community matters. It matters because this is our home. It’s where our employees live. It’s where we work,” said John J. Prete, president of the Connecticut and Massachusetts operations for Avangrid Networks. The nonprofits, receiving support, all operate within the 17 communities UI serves. The AVANGRID Foundation coordinates and funds environmental, educational and social responsibility programs for AVANGRID companies. In 2016, more than $680,000 will be donated to communities in Connecticut. Of that amount, $400,000 is designated for communities in UI’s service area.
One hundred thirty nonprofits, in 2015, received funding totaling $325,000 from UI to support activities that ranged from basic needs services and affordable housing initiatives, to education to workforce development, and to arts and culture groups like New Haven’s International Festival of Arts & Ideas and the Barnum Festival in Bridgeport. The Foundation awarded $301,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations in the region that included Fair Haven Community Health Center in New Haven, Griffin Hospital in Derby and the Shubert Theatre in New Haven.
In addition, four local chapters of the United Way received $28,750 in support from the Foundation. The Connecticut-based Operation Fuel, Inc., an organization dedicated to ensuring that people in need have access to year-round energy assistance also received $24,893 in funding.
“We continue to be inspired by organizations throughout our communities. We are pleased to support the work of our nonprofit partners who are providing the programs and services that meet the needs of our communities,” said Prete.
