Berlin Programs Among Beneficiaries of More than $250,000 in Grants as Community Foundation Makes First Awards of 2018
NEW BRITAIN, CT -- A $12,500 grant to the Connecticut Main Street Center to further transit-oriented development planning in Kensington is among more than $250,000 in grants announced by the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, the organization’s first grant awards of 2018.
The Community Foundation’s board of directors recently approved $254,900 in the Community Response, Community Initiatives and Donor-Advised Grant categories. Some $48,500 – including the transit planning grant – will impact Berlin, including a $25,000 grant for an Emergency Assistance Plan to aid survivors of Hurricane Maria facing potential homelessness, including those who may reside in Berlin; a $10,000 grant to Junior Achievement of Southwest New England for Berlin High School’s JA Pathways to Careers program; and a $1,000 grant to the New Britain-Berlin YMCA.
Following is a listing of recently approved Community Foundation grants:
Community Initiatives
- Consolidated School District of New Britain. A $20,000 grant from the First Years First Fund to support the Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE) program, aimed at reducing summer learning loss among low-performing students in grades 1 through 4.
Arts, Culture & Heritage
- Southington Community Cultural Arts. An $18,500 grant from the Alix W. Stanley Charitable Fund, Catharine McHenry Rogers Fund and Georgia Knapp Thomson Fund to expand All Access, an arts program that providing accessibility to all, especially people with disabilities.
Community and Economic Development
- Connecticut Main Street Center. A $12,500 grant from the William H. Judd, Jr. Fund, Joseph A. Mlynarski, MD, Memorial Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to further transit-oriented development planning and implementation in Kensington Village.
- Rebuilding Together New Britain. A $15,000 grant from the Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund, Anna Thornton Fund, Walter H. Dickman Fund and Elizabeth J. Berry Fund to replace equipment and upgrade technology.
Education
- Connecticut Science Center. A $15,200 grant from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund and Anna T. Deutsch Fund to provide professional development for Next Generation Science Standards educators in Plainville and Southington.
- Consolidated School District of New Britain. A $40,000 grant from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund, Louis G. and Ada C. Amodio Fund for Children, Anonymous Fund for Education, Justus S. and Lillian F. Beach Fund and Charles L. Munford, Jr., Memorial Fund to support XTREME and CREATE, summer programs designed to help diminish the achievement and enrichment gap.
- First Tee Program of Connecticut. A $15,000 grant from the J. Edward and Justine B. Melson Family Fund, William T. Livingston Memorial Fund, Ted and Nancy Howe Fund, Jeannette Elizabeth Westlake Memorial Fund, Donald W. and Virginia C. Davis Fund and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to support the golf curriculum in the Consolidated School District of New Britain.
- Junior Achievement of Southwest New England. A $10,000 grant from the William E. Attwood Jr. Fund, Marshall A. Pease Memorial Fund, Vic and Jane Darnell Fund and Donald W. and Virginia C. Davis Fund for JA Pathways to Careers, a new program at Berlin High School.
Health and Human Services
- Columbus House Inc. A $7,500 grant from the Ev and Ethel Herre Memorial Fund and Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund to support case management for seniors at The Jefferson.
- Connecticut Center for Nonviolence. A $5,000 grant from the Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund and Anonymous Fund to provide Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation Training to area police departments.
- Klingberg Family Centers, Inc. A $17,600 grant from the Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund, Ronald and Alice Gilrain Fund and Georgia Knapp Thomson Fund to evaluate gaps in services for those on the Autism spectrum, and to offer training for providers.
- Prudence Crandall Center, Inc. A $12,000 grant from the Junior League of Greater New Britain Fund, Spencer P. Torell Fund and Robert A. and Phyllis T. Mugford Fund for security enhancements.
- United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. A $25,000 grant from the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund, Vicenta Alverio Memorial Fund, William and Bette Batchelor Fund and Bernard McAvay Fund for an Emergency Assistance Plan to aid Hurricane Survivors from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands facing potential homelessness in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and/or Southington.
- YWCA of New Britain. A $30,000 grant from the Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund, A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund and Helen M. Lynch Fund for Building Hope Together to support the Homelessness Prevention Program and Work Plan Coordinator position.
Additional Grants (Donor-Advised)
- Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund. A total of $10,600 in grants to programs and causes including the New Britain Legacies youth basketball program; Race CF Inc. Race Cystic Fibrosis Program; New Britain Fagan Jr. Baseball League youth baseball program; New Britain High School Parents Music Association for new madrigal costumes; Grace C.M.E. Church in support of the Connie Wilson Collins Gala; Central Connecticut Celtic Cultural Committee for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade; and Coram Deo in support of the annual banquet.
- Round Table Fund. A $1,000 grant to the New Britain-Berlin YMCA for general purposes in memory of Selden Kenneth Griffen, III.
