NEW HARTFORD and TORRINGTON, CT -- Katherine Kinane, PhD of New Hartford and Kathleen Weinstein of Torrington have been named to the executive committee of the Women & Girls Fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation. The Fund awards grants annually for programs and capital needs with a focus on promoting economic self-sufficiency for women and girls through education, financial literacy and social services.
A resident of New Hartford and a graduate of the University of Connecticut and Keuka College, Katherine Kinane served as director of student development and assistant professor of sociology at Northwestern Connecticut Community College in Winsted from 1987 to 2009. She was responsible for student-related activities, including career planning, academic advisement, job placement, veteran’s affairs, student activities, program development, counseling, student government and campus life and served on more than a dozen committees. She taught courses including Introduction to Sociology, Marriage and the Family, Sociology of Aging, Field Work for Human Services and Volunteer Organizations and Leadership.
Katherine served as vice chair of the Standing Advisory Committee to the Board of Governors for the Connecticut State Department of Higher Education, chair of the Council of Directors of Counseling/Student Development for Connecticut Community Colleges, and has served on evaluation teams for counseling services at several community colleges; chairing two.
She is currently chair of the board of directors of the Bakerville Library and the Elder Services Advisory Board for New Opportunities and serves on the Advisory Board for the Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging and the Conservation Commission for the Town of New Hartford. She is a founder member of the board directors of the Litchfield County Women’s Network.
A resident of Torrington and a graduate of Western Connecticut State University, Kathleen Weinstein is director of development at Prime Time House in Torrington, where she is responsible for fundraising activities, public relations and marketing. Previously, she served as admissions and public relations director and development director at the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School and division director for Columbia County for the American Heart Association.
She has served in several capacities at the University of Connecticut Health Center, including associate director of development, the UConn Children’s Cancer Fund coordinator and the alumni affairs coordinator. She has served as regional director for the National Health Screening Council for Volunteer Organizations, Inc. and project director for the Channel 3 Health Expo.
Established as a giving circle in 1999 by a small group of women who shared a concern for the real-life needs of local women and girls, the Women & Girls Fund has awarded more than $50,000 to organizations that serve women and girls in the development of economic self-sufficiency by means of education, financial literacy and social services.
The Fund has awarded grants to support child-care scholarships for working mothers, assisted unemployed women to enter the workforce, provided transportation to working women, enhanced economic opportunities and promoted self-sufficiency for women leaving abusive relationships, and funded leadership and assertiveness workshops girls.
