Gifts Support Early Childhood Development, Arts, Community Events and More
NEW BRITAIN, CT -- Highlighted by major funding for early childhood development programs as part of its signature First Years First Initiative, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has wrapped up its 2016 grantmaking year with more than $230,000 in grants and scholarships.
The Community Foundation’s board of directors last week approved $232,300 in grant awards benefitting non-profit organizations and programs serving Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. Included were $3,400 in Community Sponsorship Awards to support local community events in 2017.
A complete wrap-up of the Foundation’s 2016 grantmaking year will be published in January.
Following is a complete list of year-end Community Foundation grants and scholarships:
First Year First (Early Childhood Development)
- Coalition for New Britain’s Youth. A $50,000 grant for ongoing support of the Coalition’s work in New Britain focusing on improving the lives of children and youth, birth through age 24.
- Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington. Up to $30,000 to support staffing, infrastructure and expenses associated with implementation of the Community Plan for Southington’s Young Children, aimed at fulfilling the ECCS mission that Southington children enter kindergarten ready to learn.
- Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut. A $40,000 grant to support the Central Connecticut Family Literacy Center, which provides high-quality literacy programming for low-literate parents so they may support their children in school, achieve their goals and improve self-sufficiency.
Arts, Culture & Heritage
- Plainville Public Library. A $3,000 grant to purchase materials for a puppet theater and take-home kits for families.
- Shakesperience Productions. A $7,500 grant to provide a Curricular Enhancement Program for students in New Britain public schools.
- Southington Public Schools. A $7,200 grant for third-year support of a partnership with the New Britain Museum of American Art that engages Southington 3rd graders in the arts.
Health and Human Services
- Ana Grace Project. Up to $15,000 in capacity-building funding to hire a fund development consultant.
- Prudence Crandall Center. A $5,000 matching grant to replace the Center’s outdated phone system.
- Senior Transportation Services. A $10,000 capacity-building grant to expand the program coordinator’s hours.
- Building Hope Together/New Britain’s Permanent Work Plan to End Homelessness. A $20,000 grant to support the Homelessness Prevention Program and Work Plan Coordinator position managed by the YWCA New Britain.
Community Sponsorship Awards
- A $500 sponsorship of the 12th Annual Spring Into Fashion event on March 31, 2017.
- Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut. A $750 sponsorship of the 15th Annual Scrabble Challenge on May 4, 2017.
- New Britain High School Parent Music Association. A $500 sponsorship of the Marching Band Fundraiser Gala on March 4, 2017.
- Plainville Choral Society. A $750 sponsorship of the musical “The Boy Friend” May 13, 19 and 20, 2017.
- YWCA of New Britain. A $900 sponsorship of the Yule Boutique (December 3, 2016).
Additional Grants (donor-advised)
- Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund. A total of $9,300 in grants to programs and causes including Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters one-on-one mentoring program; New Britain Downtown District in support of the Halloween Trick or Treat Safe Zone; Cystic Fibrosis Association in memory of William Riemer; Chrysalis Center.
- Benjamin A. Hawley New Britain Day Nursery Fund. A total of $2,000 in grants to programs and causes including the New Britain Symphony’s 2017 Young People’s Concert; Consolidated School District of New Britain’s Road to Recovery program; St. Mark Episcopal Church Food Pantry; Warm the Children Fund for warm winter clothing for New Britain children in need.
- Schaller Auto World Fund. A $5,000 grant to Tunxis Community College’s Economic Foundation for Scholarship supporting students under age 20.
- Round Table Fund. A total of $1,000 in grants to support the New Britain Industrial Museum (in memory of Horace Van Dorn) and the New Britain High School Parent Music Association for its band uniform drive.
- Conry Asset Management Charitable Fund. A $1,000 grant to the Friendship Service Center for its Adopt-a-Family program.
- Catalyst Fund (Field of Interest). A $10,000 grant to Family Promise of Central Connecticut to help establish the program and alleviate the issue of child and family homelessness in the area.
- New Britain Saturday Night Club Fund. A $1,000 grant to the New Britain Industrial Museum.
- Howey Family Fund. A total of $6,900 in grants to programs and causes including the Klingberg Family Center; Greater New Britain Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Inc.; and the Wheeler Clinic.
Scholarships
- Alma Exley Scholarship. A $5,000 scholarship to Chastity Berrios-Hernandez, a student at Fairfield University.
