Momentum Fund Announces $8.5 Million in Grants

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Momentum Fund announced today that it has awarded $8.5 million in grants to 129 501(c)(3) organizations around the country managing COVID-19 relief funds that provide grants and other forms of direct support to community-run organizations working with communities of color, historically marginalized populations, and other groups being disproportionately impacted by the pandemic that continues to ravage these communities.

Connecticut nonprofits cutting staff, services in pandemic as revenue from services plunges despite uptick in contributions

HARTFORD, CT -- Despite an uptick in individual contributions aided by the surging stock market, Connecticut nonprofit leaders say huge losses in fee-for-service revenue during the coronavirus pandemic have led to reductions in staffing, loss of access for needy residents and — in some cases — programs shutting down entirely.  Melanie Tavares, director of the Nonprofit Support Program at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, comments on changes that philanthropy is making in their funding.

BethEl Center Receives Grant to Support Homeless Shelter Services

MILFORD, CT -- Beth-El Center homeless shelter and soup kitchen in Milford has been awarded a $90,000 multi-year grant from The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. The grant will be paid out in $30,000 increments over three years to provide general operating assistance for the shelter, its support services, advocacy and community education.

Hartford Foundation and First Book Award $1 Million in Grants to Six Connecticut School Districts for Computers and Home Internet Access, Funded by The LEGO Group and The LEGO Foundation

HARTFORD, CT -- Six school districts in Connecticut will begin the school year with new Chromebooks and home Internet connectivity, enabling distance learning for the first time for nearly 3,000 students from underserved communities. The $1 million initiative will support students in kindergarten through Grade 5 in the Bloomfield, East Hartford, Manchester, Vernon, Windsor, and Windsor Locks school districts. The grants, awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and made possible through funding from The LEGO Group and The LEGO Foundation, are being distributed by First Book, a nonprofit social enterprise focused on equal access to quality education.

Susan B. Anthony Project Receives $10,000 Grant

TORRINGTON, CT -- Jeanne Fusco, executive director of the Susan B. Anthony Project, has announced a $10,000 grant award from the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation Covid-19 Rapid Response Fund. The grant will provide funding to help victims of domestic and sexual violence during what has proven to be a particularly challenging time for those affected by interpersonal violence.

Thousands of pieces of PPE donated to Waterbury-area non-profits

CHESHIRE, CT -- A team effort full of heart will help more than 100 non-profits in more than 20 towns in the Greater Waterbury and Litchfield Hills areas continue their important work during the COVID-19 pandemic. That team effort is happening at Marion Manufacturing in Cheshire, where workers have volunteered their time to unpack a truck load of PPE so representatives from the non-profits could pick them up. We’re talking about 200,000 surgical masks, 4,000 face shields, close to 800 N-95 masks. All of that made possible because of donations made to a COVID-19 Response Fund by the Greater Waterbury United Way and the Connecticut Community Foundation.

Stanley Black & Decker, Hartford Foundation Donate $100K to Support UConn Health Workers

HARTFORD, CT -- Stanley Black & Decker and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving say they teamed to donate $100,000 to UConn Health workers combating the deadly COVID-19 coronavirus. Each donated $50,000 to help the Farmington healthcare facility purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) and pay for 10 weeks of childcare support and temporary housing for employees while they treat patients with COVID-19, officials announced Monday.

Cultural Coalition Launches Economic Recovery Fund With Community Foundation

NEW LONDON, CT -- The Southeastern Connecticut Cultural Coalition announced Tuesday that in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has established the CultureSECT Economic Recovery Fund at the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut. The initiative will support local arts and culture institutions, and individual artists. The Cultural Coalition will recommend awards to be made through the Community Foundation.

Stanley Black & Decker, Hartford Foundation donate $100K to support UConn Health workers

HARTFORD, CT -- Stanley Black & Decker and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving say they teamed to donate $100,000 to UConn Health workers combating the deadly COVID-19 coronavirus. Kids In Crisis Receives New Funding

NEW CANAAN, CT -- SafeHaven for Kids, a core program of Kids In Crisis announces receipt of a $15,000 grant from the New Canaan Community Foundation. NCCC Receives $15000 Grant for Students Affected by Covid-19

Community College receives $15000 grant from Fairfield County's Community Foundation

Bank of America, Travelers and City of Hartford Contributions Will Enhance Hartford Small Business Emergency Grant Program

HARTFORD, CT -- In April, the City of Hartford, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, HEDCO, Inc., and Capital For Change launched a $1 million Small Business Emergency Assistance Grant Program. The aim is to provide at least 100 small Hartford businesses with a grant of up to $10,000 to make lease or mortgage payments, pay salaries, make vendor payments, pay taxes, or make modifications to their physical space or technology to comply with social distancing guidelines. In an effort to support additional Hartford small businesses, Bank of America and Travelers have each made grants of $125,000 and the City of Hartford has allocated an additional $125,000 to the initiative.

Not only was the amount raised nearly double that of the prior year, but the number of total donors was up by 43 percent - a sign of the commitment and generosity of the region to rally for its continued well-being.

Guilford Foundation Raises Money, Keeps Organizations Connected During Crisis

$1.3 million distributed to Greater New Haven nonprofits helping vulnerable communities

NEW HAVEN, CT -- Approximately $2.6 million has been raised for nonprofits helping vulnerable communities amid the coronavirus pandemic, half of which already has been awarded. The Greater New Haven COVID-19 Community Fund recently distributed a second round of grants totaling $677,000 to 36 organizations after giving out almost $700,000 in the first ground. The fund launched in late March as a partnership between the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and United Way of Greater New Haven to raise money and get resources quickly to area nonprofits helping vulnerable communities affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

Child & Family Guidance Center Continues Services During COVID-19 Thanks to Grant from Two Funders

Cornerstone, other nonprofits get grants for COVID-19 response

HARTFORD, CT -- The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced a round of grants totaling $716,334 to several nonprofits around the state, including many that are in or serve the north-central region. The grants constitute the fourth round of funding as part of the charitable organization’s COVID-19 Response Fund, which was launched in March, bringing the total amount donated through the fund to about $4 million.

City of Hartford Distrubutes Thousands of PPE Through Partnerships with State of Connecticut, Philanthropic Foundations

HARTFORD, CT -- Today the City of Hartford conducted two significant distributions of PPE.  The first distribution today is in partnership with the State of Connecticut and CBIA-CONNSTEP, which will provide more than 3,500 recently donated surgical masks to more than 100 essential businesses in Hartford that registered online. A partnership between the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and New Britain medical equipment manufacturer OKAY Industries, Inc., produced 4,000 face shields for more than a dozen regional non-profits.

COVID-19 Response Fund Grants as of April 21

BRANFORD, CT -- The Branford Community Foundation established the COVID-19 Response Fund for Branford in March as soon as it became clear that this virus would significantly impact our community. The initial goal was to raise $20,000 to provide immediate, short-term financial relief to individuals who live or work in the Town of Branford through the Women & Family Life Center. As of April 16, thanks to the community's generosity, the fund has secured $128,611.

Foundation reports response fund activity
