The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven

NEW HAVEN, CT -- In 2013, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven began the celebration of its 85th year as Greater New Haven’s permanent charitable trust. In doing so, it honored the donors, past and present, who made reaching 85 possible.

Since its beginning, The Community Foundation has used funds entrusted to it to build a stronger community, applying the commitments and aspirations of prior generations to meet the challenges of today and to inspire its community to create the opportunities of tomorrow.

While the community has greatly changed over the decades, the essential ingredients of what it means to be a strong community are remarkably constant. History reveals that The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has been tackling important issues since its earliest years, just as it does today. Since the early days, grants have been awarded from the endowment to support the arts, meet basic needs, provide quality education, nurture children and youth, ensure health and wellness, protect the environment, boost economic success and promote civic vitality.

Drawing on both the experience of being 85 years old and the exuberance of being 85 years young, The Community Foundation produced a report within this past year entitled Calibrating the Community, which provides a portrait of its twenty-town region through a framework of the aforementioned eight interconnected issue areas.

It has also worked to increase the visibility of Greater New Haven’s nonprofits through giveGreater.org® - the home of the annual 36-hr online, community-wide giving event known as The Great Give®, that generated over three-quarters of a million dollars this May for local nonprofits.
