Fundamentals of Philanthropy is a five-part series that helps all working in philanthropy better understand the sector.

SESSION 1: Speaking the Same Language - The Role and Basics of Philanthropy 

What is “philanthropy,” and what motivates philanthropists? We’ll explore the history of philanthropy and the role it currently plays in conjunction with the nonprofit, private, and public sectors. We’ll also dive into important questions of equity and power around the establishment of philanthropy as a sector in the United States, and outline the different types of grantmaking organizations.

SESSION TOPICS

Who should attend? This series is for anyone who has joined the sector in the last few years, or who is interested in reviewing the fundamentals. It is open to all staff and board of philanthropic organizations, including those in leadership, program, grantmaking, administrative, financial, human resources, communications, development, and trustee roles. 

This interactive series provides a historical overview of philanthropy, reviews foundation governance and legal issues, explains the grantmaking process, debates current big issues in philanthropy, and explores roles and power dynamics. Participants are encouraged to attend as many modules as possible as the series is also designed to support staff in building their professional network.

Fundamentals of Philanthropy is an update of CCP’s Philanthropy 101 curriculum, originally developed by Philanthropy New York in partnership with the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy's Grantmaking School.
