Connecticut Council for Philanthropy Announces an Interim President

Thursday, July 14, 2016

Hartford, CT – The Connecticut Council for Philanthropy (CCP) announces the appointment of David Davison as interim president beginning July 1, following the recent departure of Maggie Osborn. Davison, who recently retired as president & CEO of the American Savings Foundation, will stay until a new president is named.

“With his experience as a grantmaker and his knowledge of the nonprofit community, Dave is the perfect fit for us during this time of transition,” said Judith Meyers, chair of the board of the CCP and president & CEO of the Children’s Fund of Connecticut. “CCP will be in good hands while we search for a new president.”

Davison served on the board of CCP for several years, including a stint as its chair in 2009-2011, thus he is very familiar with the organization’s mission and its membership. In 16 years at the New Britain-based American Savings Foundation he developed its grantmaking strategies and college scholarships program – overseeing a total of $45 million in contributions. His forty-year career in nonprofits began at a settlement house on New York City’s Lower East Side. He came to Connecticut in 1994 to work in the development office of the Yale School of Medicine.

“I am honored to be named to take on this responsibility,” said Davison. “CCP is a vibrant organization that has been very well-run for many years, and it will be my job to work with our terrific staff and outstanding board to make sure that continues. Our core mission is to promote and facilitate the work of our member organizations. They make the grants that serve the public good in communities across Connecticut.”

“Maggie did an excellent job preparing the organization before she left,” said Meyers.  “And Dave put a lot of energy into the transition ahead of time, so that handing over the keys last week went as smoothly as one could hope for.”

For many organizations going through a leadership change, an interim executive is the way to go. There is a growing body of knowledge and resources around the practice of hiring an interim, a strategy that can provide sufficient time for a board of directors to reassess things as needed and to hire the right person.

“With an interim president in place we can review our strategic plans, the needs of the staff, and most important, the expectations of our membership as we seek out the best candidates,” said Meyers. “CCP’s Board Vice Chair Michael Johnston is leading the search committee and we expect to complete the process by the end of the calendar year.” Johnston is CEO of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford. Other search committee members include Meyers, Sue Murphy (past CCP board chair) of Liberty Bank Foundation, R. David Addams of William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund, Diana Echevarria of Newman’s Own Foundation, Linda Franciscovich of The Grossman Family Foundation, and Paula Van Ness of Connecticut Community Foundation.
